Larry Hesselink, 70
Larry Hesselink, age 70, of New Richmond, retired New Richmond High School teacher, died Monday, Jan. 19, at his country home.
Larry was born on April 18, 1944, in Baldwin; the son of Warren and Adeline (Fern) Hesselink. He was raised in Baldwin where he attended elementary school prior to graduating from Baldwin High School in the class of '62.
As a young man, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon Larry's honorable discharge, he would further his education at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, as well as in Colorado. He began his teaching career at New Richmond High School where he taught math and computer science classes. He would later teach computer courses through UWRF. In 1987, Larry married Faith Guest. They had two sons, Andy and Nick. They later divorced.
If you knew Larry, you appreciated his deep love of bear hunting and fishing Wisconsin's North Woods. He shared this joy with others through his guide service, North Country Outfitters. Furthermore, he loved night hunting with his world competition coon hounds. But it wasn't always land he traveled in pursuing his passions. He owned and operated Xtreme Angler Fishing Charters.
As a certified U.S. Coast Guard captain, he helped others catch trophy Lake Trout or Salmon off his beloved Apostle Islands. Larry's favorite moments, though, were those spent with family. The love of fishing he learned from his father, Warren, led to many trips to Canada with his parents, brother Jerry, his boys, and close friends. He loved time spent at their Delta property up north, their home away from home. Larry was always busy on a project around his house or property. He took joy in tending to his hunting land. In recent years, he found love with his best friend, Ruth Brenne. They loved spending time together driving the countryside or capturing life's beauty traveling around the state or country.
What was evident at Larry's passing was that he lived life with no regrets. He was pleased with his accomplishments, but ever so proud of the men his 'boys' became. Watching his grandchildren gave him the greatest pleasure.
Larry is survived by his sons, Andy (Elizabeth) Hesselink and Nick Hesselink; grandchildren, Tenley, Trevor, and Austin; partner and love of his life, Ruth Brenne; mother, Adeline Hesselink; brother, Jerry (Margaret) Hesselink; and niece and nephew, Tara (Chris) Crotteau and Todd (Mark) Hesselink.
