Gwynn Merrill Christensen

Gwynn M. Christensen, age 92 of New Richmond, WI passed away peacefully November 5, 2017 at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond, WI. Gwynn was born the son of Rolland and Margaret (Krueger) Christensen on August 21, 1925 at home in Lake Mills, WI. Gwynn graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1943. He then enlisted and served his country in WWII in the U. S. Navy Air Corps from 1943-45. He was stationed in the South Pacific and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery. Following the war, he graduated from UW-Madison, playing football for the Badgers from 1947-1950. He then received his Masters from UW-Stout. He married his hometown sweetheart, Pearl Hein, on July 29, 1950 and then began teaching and coaching in high schools from 1950-59. His college coaching began at Wayne State in Nebraska and in 1962 he moved his family to River Falls, WI and became Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at UW-River Falls. In 1970, a career move brought his family to New Richmond where he found his niche in sales. Gwynn supported his beloved Badgers and attended four Rose Bowls in Pasadena. He was an avid golfer and Green Bay Packer fan. He was also a member of the ZOR Shrine, Mason, the American Legion in New Richmond and was an active member of United Methodist Church for 45 years.

Gwynn is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Pearl, daughters Vicki (Chuck) Ulrich, Tama (Scott) Schmidt. Grandchildren Charlie Ulrich (Deana), Emily Wolf (Gary), Taylor Moe (Tom), Sarah Cupo (Jason) and Carley Schmidt, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Rolland and Margaret (Krueger) his brother Gordon, father and mother-in-law Ben and Clara (Steinel) Hein, sisters-in-law Betty Christensen, Elaine Hein, Joyce Schuld, brothers in law Jim, Marvin (Rachel) and Phil Hein.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 2 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at New Richmond United Methodist Church (209 East 2nd St.), followed by a Masonic service at 11:30 a.m. and funeral service at 12:00 noon. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion Post #80 of New Richmond. Our family would like to express a very heartfelt thank you to Westfields Hospital, Lakeview Hospice and especially the American Heritage Care Center for their support, compassion, and wonderful care of Gwynn. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the family.
