Letter: Hoyt story inspires all in attendance

To the Editor:

The Rotary Club of New Richmond would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire community for the tremendous turn out for the inspirational evening the club sponsored on Tuesday, June 17, in the spirit of Father's Day.

Dick Hoyt, better known as "Team Hoyt," held the whole room at Ready Randy's in tears as he shared his life story of living up to the demands of raising a handicapped child and the joys and blessings that he has experienced as a result of not listening to the doctors who told him to place his first born son in an institution when he was born.

Together Dick and Rick Hoyt have run in marathons, competed in triathlons, and trekked across America. It is truly astounding when you consider that Rick Hoyt is unable to speak, walk or talk.

But with Dick supplying the physical ability and dedication and Rick, the inspiration and motivation, Team Hoyt exemplifies the power that is in each of us. Truly a great story of the power of love and commitment.

The goal of Team Hoyt is to integrate the physically challenged into everyday life, and to spread the message of "YOU CAN!"

One way to accomplish this is to educate the able-bodied, making them more aware of the issues that the disabled face every day.

Another is by actively helping the disabled to participate in activities that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. Team Hoyt targets both of these areas.

The evening was originally started as a dream of the current president-elect of the Rotary Club of New Richmond, Mark Devereux. He has followed the story of Team Hoyt for several years and made it a personal goal of his to share their story with our community, and to one day meet Dick Hoyt.

After hours of planning and considerable investment on his own behalf, along with the assistance of his fellow Rotarians, this dream became a reality. Those in attendance had the good fortune to experience this truly inspirational message.
