Letter: Support newly elected representatives
To the Editor:
I am writing this on the morning of the election. We have no idea of the winners or losers. By the time this is in print, we will have a new President elect. We will have an assemblyman, either John Murtha returning or Chris Buckel elected.
I ask you all to do a couple of things.
First, whether your candidate won or lost, support the new candidate, at least until they do things to lose that support. It is time to come together. I guarantee you that Murtha and Buckel both want the best for our residents. They have differing ideas on how to get there, but I know both men, I like both men and I know they both want great things for Wisconsin.
Obama and McCain both want the U.S. to continue to be the great country that it is, and get even better. They may have different views on how to achieve that, but they are competent, qualified, patriotic Americans. They deserve our support until they lose it.
There is a huge amount of money to be made by the media if they continue to convince us to be divided. Keith Olbermann and Rush Limbaugh need a boogeyman to keep making money. They are sensationalists trying to whip their listeners into a frenzy. John McCain eats babies, Obama is an alien. Of course that's not true, but it hits my e-mail box. Someone believes the garbage that gets started and the Olbermann, Limbaugh types laugh all the way to the bank.
For now, elevate the discourse. Believe that people will try to do what is right. Learn facts.
Don't believe everything you hear, especially if the messenger is getting rich spewing the message. Make up your mind about the job they are doing after they do the job.
Oh, and take down the signs.
