LETTER: Experiences give life clarity

To the Editor:

At 49, I've learned that there are experiences in life that really clarify one's beliefs. Living here in western Wisconsin these last six months has been one of those experiences for me.

This, I believe:

I believe that every member of our society benefits from every child receiving a quality public education.

I believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that every child, regardless of social class, deserves to start the school day well-nourished and ready to learn.

I believe that everyone -- the rich, the poor, the middle class, businesses small and large -- should contribute to public goods and services.

I believe that voting is a basic right of all citizens, and that the government should not make it more difficult for good, honest people to exercise this right.

I believe that workers having a voice on the job is better for the safety of our communities, better for the health of patients, better for the success of students and better for all of society.

I believe that the environment is our state's most valuable natural resource, and that failing to protect this resource jeopardizes our way of life. Whether you are a hunter, a camper or a tree-hugger like me, we all expect our government to recognize the value of Wisconsin's great outdoors.

I believe that we should vote based on our values, and not on the rhetoric.

And I know I will be voting for Shelly Moore on Aug. 9.
