Growing a green thumb
Though I understand that people change as they get older, it still amazes me there are many things that I am now finding myself enjoying or wanting to do more of after having little to no interest when I was a teenager and throughout college.
Most people know that for the last few years I have really taken to cooking and wanted to learn as much as I can while also taking every opportunity to cook I can find. When I was younger the only thing that I enjoyed about cooking was being able to eat what my mother made me for supper every night. Now I want to follow in my mother’s footsteps and cook every night for my wife and my children when they come along in the future.
Much like my new found love for cooking, I have really started to enjoy cleaning, be it doing the dishes, vacuuming the house or just cleaning up my own messes. Both activities are calming for me and put me in a place of peace where I can just be me, enjoy what I’m doing and rock out to some music.
This summer, I am really looking forward to adding another so far untested hobby to my list of new things I enjoy: gardening.
Since I can remember, my mother has not only cooked and cleaned our house, but she has also been passionate about her gardens which have continued to claim more and more of the backyard at my parent’s home over the years. Part of my desire to garden is to, like my mother, make our house and the surrounding yard look better and more inviting to anyone who visits. I love the smell of fresh flowers and recently cut grass and I am excited to smell those things at my new house this summer.
In addition to my desire to have a beautiful garden to make our house and yard look better, I also really want to start my own vegetable garden so that my wife and I can have a supply of fresh veggies to use in our meals and to share with my family. I’m not really sure why I want to have a vegetable garden so much, but I’d guess it is connected to my love of cooking and wanting to grow my own food so that we don’t have to spend so much on groceries. It also might have to do with my wife and my desire to eat healthier, which would be a lot easier if we had our own supply of veggies that we both enjoy to eat.
I’m sure things won’t go quite as planned, and they might take a little longer to pull together than I think, but I can’t wait to get working on our garden and earn my green thumb. I have so many ideas in my head as to what I want, how to build it all and where to put flowers that I might go a little crazy if I’m not able to start working on the garden in the next couple of weeks.
But Mother Nature continues to plan a mean game of peek-a-boo with spring, giving us warm weather then taking it away and giving us freezing rain and snow. I love snow a lot and I can’t get enough of it, but it is spring now and I’d really like it if the weather would act like it.
Hopefully by this fall my wife and I will have a beautiful garden in place and some sort of vegetable garden started so that we can, if nothing else, be ready to go next spring so it isn’t too much longer until we have a nice supply of vegetables for ourselves.
