SCC's Johnson wins sectional title, Somerset to have several entries at state

COLBY - St. Croix Central distance runner Brett Johnson won the lone sectional championship from St. Croix County at the WIAA Division 2 Colby Sectional Thursday. But he won't be alone at next weekend's state meet in La Crosse.

Johnson won the 1600-meter run in 4:32.58 and he'll compete in the 3200-meter run down in La Crosse after finishing third. But he'll be joined by his Central teammates Steven Brunshindle, Alex Halvorson, Shaun Feyerisan, Carl Moll and Andrew Skala as they finished second in the 3200-meter relay.

Central's boys team had one of its best showing ever in a Division 2 sectional track meet as they finished eighth with 33 points. The SCC girls placed 17th with 13 points. However the Panthers will have a state participant as Jenna Ganther finished fourth in the triple jump.

Somerset finished ninth in the girls meet and 12th in the boys. Although they had no individual sectional champiosn they'll still take a sizeable contingent with them to state.

Qualifying for the girls were Sara Henry, fourth in the high jump, Sarah Krig, third in the pole vault and the girls' 400, 800 and 1600 relays. Dylan Rivard finished second in the 400-meter dash to qualify and going with him from the Spartan boys' team are their 400, 800 and 1600 relays also.

Somerset's girls' 400 relay placed fourth, the 800 relay was third and the 1600 team finished fourth. The boys' relay places were almost identical. The 400-meter team finished fourth, the 800 second and the 1600-meter quartet was fourth.
