Former Badger makes U.S. Olympic track team
Former University of Wisconsin runner Matt Tegenkamp has made the Olympic track team.
He placed second in the 5,000 meter final Monday night at the U.S. Trials in Eugene Ore.
Ex-Badger Chris Solinsky placed fourth - one spot short of making it to Beijing. Solinsky led the race with about 1,000 meters left, but eventual winner Bernard Lagat passed him with about 200 meters to go.
Tegenkamp was the next to pass his ex-teammate and Ian Dobson passed Solinsky with 100 meters left to take third. Jonathan Riley of Fitchburg took 13th.
Tegenkamp is the first Badger to make the Summer Olympics since Pascal Dobert in 2000.
Also at the U.S. trials, former Badger Joe Detmer of Lodi took 11th in the decathlon. Kevin Becker, formerly of UW-La Crosse, tied for 20th in the preliminaries of the hammer throw.
Former Badger 'A Havalah Haynes took 24th and last in the semi-finals of the women's 3,000 meter steeple chase.
