Somerset youth baseball team qualifies for state
The Somerset U12AA baseball team qualified for the MBT state tournament by taking third place in the West St. Paul Tournament over the weekend.
On Friday night, the Spartans had the opportunity to play Thunder Bay, Ontario and pulled off a come-from-behind victory, 6-5.
On Saturday morning, the Spartans took on the Wildcats from River Falls. In come-from-behind fashion once again, the Spartans earned a hard fought victory of 13-7, securing a spot in Sunday's championship round. In the last game of pool play, the Spartans fell to West St. Paul.
In Sunday's championship semifinal, the Spartans played an extremely tough St. Paul Midway squad. The Spartans played tough throughout the game but could not overcome its early-inning mishaps, dropping the game 14-3.
The loss to St. Paul Midway put the Spartans in the third place game against South St. Paul. The bats did not get going for the Spartans until late in the game and by this time South St. Paul had built a 7-2 lead. Like the Spartans have done all season, they began to battle back, taking the lead in the fifth inning and never looking back on the way to a 11-7 victory.
This win gave the U12AA Spartans an automatic bid to the MBT state tournament in Prior Lake on July 19-21.
