The wind whipped around Bristol Ridge Golf Course last Tuesday, stirring up the scores in the WIAA Division 2 Girls Golf Sectional Tournament hosted by Somerset.

The Spartans played capably under the challenging conditions on their home course, placing sixth among the eight teams competing. The Spartans shot 431 for the day. The Spartans finished two strokes behind Northwestern, which was a regional tournament champion.

Somerset junior Stacy Bracht played an outstanding front nine in the tournament, but a few problem holes on the back nine cost her a trip to state.

Bracht shot a 44 on the front nine, which ranked her second as the golfers made the turn. Two sevens and a nine in the first four holes of the back nine shot down Bracht’s chances.

“She did pull it back together on the last few holes,” said Somerset coach Bill Powers.

Those problem holes caused Bracht’s score on the back nine to rise to 54, giving her a 98 for the day. The highest score to qualify for the state tournament as an individual was 95.

With Bracht and sophomores Ally Wittstock and Cally Meixner, the Spartans will have a strong nucleus for next year. Wittstock and Meixner both handled the pressure well of playing in a sectional tournament. Wittstock finished the day by shooting 107 and Meixner continued her late-season progress by shooting 112.

“Ally and Cally and Stacy will work to get better. I know they’ll be better next year,” Powers stated.

Seniors Meghan Wolner and Rachel Briggs completed their high school golf careers at the sectional meet. Wolner shot 114 while Briggs finished at 118 in the sectional meet.

Two St. Croix Central seniors were able to complete their careers by playing in the sectional tournament. Katlyn Delander ranked second among the individual qualifiers playing in the tournament by shooting 114. Central’s Janelle Olson finished the day with a 127.

Bristol Ridge played extremely tough for all the girls in the tournament. Ladysmith’s Haley Seifert was the medalist and she shot an 89. There were just seven girls who shot below 100 in the tournament.

Hayward and Spooner were the teams that qualified for state, shooting 402 and 406, respectively. Osceola missed qualifying by one stroke, shooting 407.
