Tuesday's Results: Somerset hockey wins playoff opener, Somerset wrestlers lose at team sectionals

The Somerset boys hockey team advanced in the opening round of the WIAA playoffs on Tuesday night, but the Somerset wrestling team was defeated at the WIAA Division 2 team sectional tournament.

There was also plenty of boys basketball action on Tuesday, with New Richmond losing to Ellsworth and St. Croix Central defeating Somerset.

In hockey, Somerset used its best offensive period of the season to put away the Northwest Icemen in a battle between the eighth and ninth seeds in the WIAA sectional tournament bracket. Somerset led 2-1 after the first period, before erupting for six goals in the second period. Jack Peterson had a huge night, finishing with four goals and four assists. Eli Tuttle and Dominic Abbott both scored twice for the Spartans.

With the win, the Spartans advance to Thursday's regional final. They will play at top-seeded Hudson at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

The Somerset wrestlers made their first appearance at the WIAA team sectional tournament in the Division 2 sectional meet at Hayward. Unfortunately for the Spartans, they drew defending sectional champion Ellsworth in the opening round at the sectional meet. Ellsworth defeated Somerset 67-12. Ellsworth then defeated Spencer-Columbus to earn another trip to the WIAA state team tournament. Somerset's win at the sectional tournament came from seniors Garret Hecht and Peter Lepper, with both of them recording pins.

In boys basketball:

-- Ellsworth defeated New Richmond, 77-65. New Richmond kept the game close, trailing 65-61 with 3:38 remaining. Joey Kidder led New Richmond with 18 and Blake Getschel scored 16.

-- The St. Croix Central boys defeated Somerset, 65-52.
