Rebuilding Tigers earn trip to state dance meet

This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the New Richmond High School Dance Team.

The Tigers have rebuilt their path of past seasons, all the way to the 2008 Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches State Championships, which will be held this Saturday in La Crosse.

The Dance Team earned their way to state with strong performances in the Kick and Pom divisions at the 2008 Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches Western Division Championships in Eau Claire last Saturday.

New Richmond placed second in the Kick Division and third in the Pom Division to earn a trip to state in each division. The top three kick teams and the top four pom teams from each division meet advance to state. The Tigers compete in Division 2 in dance competitions.

That the Tigers reached state is a massive accomplishment, considering there are 12 new girls on the team this season. Coach Alli Gjovik and seven girls returned from last year's squad.

"For us, to not only place, but to get to state, is a big deal," Gjovik said. "They've worked so hard, it's pretty exciting."

There is only one senior on this year's Tiger team, Breanna Cook.

The Saturday before regionals, the Tigers competed in the conference meet at Rice Lake. This is a combined meet of teams from the Big Rivers, Middle Border and Dunn-St. Croix conferences.

New Richmond won the Middle Border Conference championship in the Kick Division and the Tigers took second in the conference in the Pom Division. There are five dance teams in the MBC.

There are also solo and ensemble performances at the conference meet. New Richmond's Abbie Anderson earned the conference championship in the solo performance division. New Richmond's Jesse Olson placed fifth in the solo division.

New Richmond had two ensembles that shared third place in the MBC. Allissa Johannsen and Allison Johannsen were one team that took third place, with the team of Clare Johnston and Brooke Jenderny also receiving third place.

Team members for this year's Tiger Dance Team are Kristy Martinson, Maggie Evans, Abbie Anderson, Breanna Cook, Lindsay Greening, Allissa Johannsen, Allison Johannsen, Jesse Olson, Brittany Jonsson, Sammi Kizer, Brooke Jenderny, Alex Steen, Clare Johnston, Sarah Steffen, Molly Holland, Tayler Parfitt, Annika Utgaard, Steph Kastens and Mary Balow.
