Mitchell races to national honors

Ayla Mitchell took second place in the mile run for UW-Oshkosh in the NCAA Division 3 National Indoor Track Championships, held over the weekend at Ohio Northern University.

By placing second at the national championship meet, Mitchell earns NCAA All-American status.

Mitchell finished the national championship race in 4:58.61, the second time she has finished a mile in under five minutes this season. Mitchell and Marie Borner of Bethel College put on a great show in the championship race. Borner set a Ohio Northern fieldhouse record by winning the race in a time of 4:58.36, a quarter of a second ahead of Mitchell.

Mitchell led the Titans to a 12th place finish in the national championships.

Mitchell has had a large impact on the Titans this year after transferring from the University of Minnesota. At the UW-Oshkosh Invitational, Mitchell set a school record by running the mile in 4:54.98.

Mitchell ran cross country last fall for the Titans. She finished 13th to earn All-America status at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championship. Mitchell was named to the 2007 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team.

UW-Oshkosh will host the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track Championships on May 22-24 at Titan Stadium.
