Second place a good place to be for Tiger track teams

Both of the New Richmond track teams were second place finishers at an indoor meet at UW-Stout in Menomonie last Tuesday.

And that was a pretty good place to be.

The Tigers finished second to Menomonie in both halves of the meet. The Tigers were a bit short-handed, especially on the girls team, because the meet conflicted with an FBLA competition.

New Richmond's boys are starting to get healthy and they received good news on the injury front. The knee injury suffered by senior Brian Figueroa was diagnosed as a deeply bruised patella and an inflamed meniscus. He will not need surgery and the coaches are hoping he will be back to full strength by the end of the month or in early May.

The distance runners gave a promising showing in this meet for the boys team. Trey Brotzler took second in the mile and Jake Wickham ran a strong 800 meters. Nick Stenske was able to get under the five minute mark in the 1600 meters.

"That's a barrier he's been trying to break," said boys coach Roger Reuvers, who said he expects Stenske to continue making big improvements this season.

Senior Jerrod Berget returned to the track for the first time since a recent appendectomy and competed in the mile.

It was a good meet for the Tiger shot putters too. Blake Jacobson and Tyler Weeks both had the best throws of their career and Alex Thorson had his best throw of the season during the meet.

Hurdles are an area where the Tigers will surprise people this season. Nate Suo took second place in this meet in the 55 hurdles and freshman Cody Taubman moved up to take fourth place.

The boys were winners in two events in the meet. Andy Lieffring was the top pole vaulter, clearing 10-6. Teammate Tony Stockey took second place.

The Tigers were also champions in the 800-meter relay.

While the Tiger girls were missing several of their top runners, it opened up opportunities for others.

"It works out, we saw some good improvements," said Tiger girls coach Judy Weiss.

The keynote for the girls team was the performance of the 800-meter relay team. The team of Mary Balow, Krissy Atterholt, Kassie Kunz and Maggie Demulling set a meet record with a time of 1:53.08.

The Tigers were also winners in the 3,200 relay, where Anna Zietlow, Maggie Evans, Anna Buresh and Molly Holland combined for the win. The Tigers also had success in the 1,600 relay, taking second place.

The Tigers will try to get their first outdoor meet of the season completed this Thursday. They are scheduled to compete in a dual meet with Menomonie on Thursday.
