Ayla Mitchell has won some big races in her career, but this might rank as the biggest.

So far that is.

On Saturday, Mitchell won the NCAA Division III Cross Country Regional Meet, finishing first among 292 collegiate runners.

The meet was held at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill. Mitchell is a New Richmond native who runs for UW-Oshkosh.

Mitchell and her teammates will be competing in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Nov. 22 in Hanover, Ind.

UW-Eau Claire won the 43-team women's competition with 108 points and was followed by UW-La Crosse's second-place total of 115 points. The Blugolds and Eagles earned automatic bids into the NCAA Division III Championship. UW-Oshkosh placed fifth in the meet.

Mitchell placed first on the 6,000-meter course with a time of 21:28.2 to surpass the field of 292 competitors. UW-River Falls' Becca Jordahl took second with a time of 21:32.0.

Jordahl and Mitchell have dueled in races for the past two years. Last year, Mitchell won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and placed second to Jordahl in the NCAA regional meet. This year those roles were reversed.
