Tiger matmen go looking for a challenge, find one at Park
A challenge was what the New Richmond wrestling team was seeking when it went to Park High School in Cottage Grove, Minn. last Tuesday.
That's exactly what the Tigers got too.
A strong start and a strong finish helped the Tigers pull out an exciting 30-29 win over Park in the non-conference match.
Park led the match 26-21 entering the final three bouts of the night. In the 189-pound out, New Richmond's Quinn Brophy fell behind early, trailing 4-1 after a period. He continued to trail until a wild flurry in the third period where he picked up two takedowns. He was able to hold on to earn a 9-8 victory.
"It was pretty much all on guts," said Tiger coach Mark Neumann on Brophy's win.
The depth of the Tiger lineup showed at 215 pounds. Senior Tom Volkert was unavailable for the match. Into the lineup stepped another senior, Blake Jacobson. Jacobson was able to pin his Park opponent, putting the Tigers in front 30-26.
"That was the night; we had to get a fall there," Coach Neumann said.
That left the 285-pound match to decide the night's festivities. New Richmond sophomore Joel Neumann was facing a strong opponent, and the two locked into a conservative defensive battle. After the six minutes of regulation that match was tied at 2-2. The score remained the same through the first overtime period. Neumann was in the down position for the second overtime. When he couldn't escape, it made the Park wrestler the winner. But because it was only a three-point decision, the Tigers were able to claim the 30-29 team victory.
The Tigers were winners in eight of the 12 matches completed in Tuesday's match. But because the Tigers gave up forfeits at 112 and 119 pounds, they had 12 points to make up through the night.
Nearly all of the matches were close at Park, which is just what the Tigers were looking for. The match started well, with freshman Tycen Sheveland getting a win at 103 pounds. Following the forfeits, the Tigers strung together wins from Tanner Turany, Jared Kerr, Brad Gartner, Jon Keller and Charlie Gartner. Park then came back to take the lead on wins at 152, 160 and 171 pounds.
This Monday and Tuesday the Tigers were scheduled to compete in the Bi-State Classic in La Crosse. The Tigers don't wrestle again until Thursday, Jan. 8, when they wrestle at Prescott. The annual New Richmond Wrestling Invitational is on the horizon, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10.
