New Richmond dance team earns return trip to state

The New Richmond High School dance team has earned a return trip to the WACPC State Dance Championships this weekend in La Crosse.

In fact, the Tiger dance team earned the best score in any category when it won the Division 2 kick competition at the WACPC Western Regional on Saturday at Eau Claire North. The Tigers scored a 451 with their kick routine, the highest score earned in any event or any division at the meet.

The Tigers are competing in a new event this year, jazz. They also earned a berth at state in the jazz competition, by placing third among 11 teams in the Division 2 competition at Eau Claire North on Saturday.

Alli Gjovik is in her third season of coaching the dance team. The girls have been practicing since November. It is a young team, with three seniors.

"Even though they're young, they're really showing signs of maturity, like work ethic, whether it's in the classroom or on the dance floor," Gjovik said.

The Tigers competed in their conference meet on Jan. 17. The Tigers won the conference championship in the kick division. In the jazz division, they tied for second place with Ellsworth.

Tiger senior Abbie Anderson took the top spot in the conference in the solo performances at the conference meet. Also earning all-conference status for solo performances were Sarah Steffen, Jesse Olson, Brittany Jonsson and Antje Utgaard. Earning all-conference honors as a duet were Clare Johnston and Brooke Jenderny.

Team members include Abbie Anderson, Allissa Johannsen, Allison Johannsen, Sarah Steffen, Rylie Berger, Molly Holland, Maggie Evans, Lexie Schultz, Kristy Martinson, Jesse Olson, Clare Johnston, Brooke Jenderny, Brittany Jonsson, Antje Utgaard and Alex Steen.

The Tigers will travel to La Crosse on Friday for the state meet, which will be held on Saturday at the La Crosse Center.
