New Richmond fishing tournament nets $15,000

The numbers are in for the first New Richmond Coaches Association Ice Fishing Tournament and it is being viewed as a strong success.

New Richmond High School Principal Jeff Moberg said the coaches association made "in the $15,000 range" from the tournament.

Moberg said the funds will be used within the school's athletic department, but the division of funds has not been decided yet.

"We had great feedback from people. It seemed like everyone had a blast," Moberg said about the initial response from the tournament.

The final estimate came in with approximately 850 people fishing in the tournament. Nearly everyone who fished in the tournament went away with a prize as $90,000 of raffle prizes were given out in the four hours following the tournament.

Moberg said there may be some procedural things changed for next year's tournament. He said one may be changing how the raffle is handled, so it doesn't last so long after the contest is done.

Another possible change is the location on Cedar Lake. Tournament organizers are looking to see if there are other areas on the lake that might bring more successful fishing results, after one fish was caught in the first tournament.
