New Richmond Legion baseball team beats River Falls, Stillwater

The New Richmond Post 80 American Legion baseball team started this week with a 13-2 record after notching wins over Stillwater and River Falls last week.

The Legion team went into the Independence Day break with a 3-2 win over Stillwater last Thursday.

Nick Swystun pitched the seven-inning complete game for Post 80. He allowed four hits and didn't walk a batter. Both of Stillwater's runs were unearned.

New Richmond scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning, when Dylan Leslie, Dan Leavens and Grant Nelson delivered consecutive singles. Stillwater then got its runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.

Post 80 answered back quickly. Aaron Kohlrusch led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Swystun then drove a single to centerfield. Sam Skatrud's bunt moved them both up a base.

After a strikeout, Leslie ripped a double past the Stillwater centerfielder, bringing home both runners.

New Richmond was limited to five hits in the game, but all five came during the two innings where Post 80 scored its runs.

The win over Stillwater came a night after Post 80 scored a 7-6 win at River Falls. Jake Zajkowski started on the mound for New Richmond, but was excused after two innings because of a sore arm. Leavens came on to earn the win in relief.

Leavens, Leslie and Michael Jansen led the offensive output for Post 80, with two hits each.

Last Tuesday, Post 80 split a double-header at St. Croix Falls. St. Croix Falls has several potent hitters and it showed in the first game. St. Croix Falls scored 10 runs in the first inning off New Richmond starter Josh Leavens. Post 80 did try to come back, but St. Croix Falls held on for a 14-7 win.

Catcher Grant Nelson was the only New Richmond player to get two hits in the opening game.

Jansen made sure New Richmond won the second game of the evening. He pitched the complete game five-hitter and pounded a two-run homer as New Richmond scored a 9-2 win.

Jansen's mound work included four strikeouts, while issuing one walk. His work at home plate started in the first inning. With the bases loaded, he singled home two runs as Post 80 built up a 4-0 lead.

Jansen then drove his homer over the left-field fence in the second inning, to put New Richmond ahead 7-2.

Leslie had another strong game at the plate, going 2-3. Skatrud drove home a pair of runs in the game.
