Somerset Legion shuts out Osceola three times

Each of the three pitchers for the Somerset American Legion baseball team was able to record a shutout last week.

All three came against Osceola.

Last Tuesday Somerset swept a double-header with Osceola, 9-0 and 6-0. Somerset was scheduled to face Unity on Friday. At Thursday's Legion All-Star Game, Somerset coach Ron Willett was informed by the Unity coach that the Unity team wouldn't have enough players for a game on Friday.

Osceola's coach said they would have players available on Friday and volunteered to face Somerset again. This time Somerset won by a 7-0 score.

Willett and Somerset pitching coach Mike Tetzlaff served as the coaches for the South team in the All-Star Game. The South won the game, 4-3.

Somerset had four players in the All-Star Game: Rocky Larson, Jared Dettman, Sean Conrad and Dakota Belter. All four played significant roles in the win.

Dettman pitched two innings, allowing one earned run. Willett saved Conrad to be his closer. Conrad earned the save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. The North got a runner to third base in the ninth before Conrad struck out the final batter of the game.

Belter scored the deciding run of the game. He tripled in the top of the ninth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to put the South team ahead 4-3.

Larson played the entire game as the South team's only catcher. He scored the first run of the game in the second inning. He finished 3-3 at the plate, including a pair of doubles.

"If I'd have been asked, he would have been the MVP of the game," Willett said.

In last Tuesday's sweep of Osceola, Dettman pitched the opening game. He struck out 10 in the five-inning two-hitter.

Belter led the offense with a homer. Belter, Dettman, Josh Baillargeon and Nick Dvorak each had two hits in the game.

Somerset led 2-0 before scoring seven runs in the fourth inning. Belter's homer, which landed in the pond beyond the rightfield fence at Larry Forrest Park, was part of that rally.

Conrad pitched the second game, matching Dettman's two-hitter with one of his own. Baillargeon, Zach Warren and Dylan Willett each produced two hits. Baillargeon had three doubles among his four hits in the double-header.

Coach Willett credited Osceola for being willing to play Somerset again on such short notice. Dvorak pitched the first five innings of Friday's game, with Conrad working the final two innings.

Willett said he wanted to get a game on Friday so he could continue the rotation of getting each of the three pitchers enough mound time each week.

Ben Kieckhoefer led the offense on Friday with three hits. Larson and Belter each had two hits.

Somerset completes its regular season schedule with a game this Thursday at Amery.

The Legion regional tournament begins next Wednesday, July 22, at Prescott. Somerset will play Prescott at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament. Ellsworth, Bloomer, Bruce, Stanley-Boyd and Chetek are also competing in the tournament. The winner of this tournament qualifies for the Legion state tournament.
