Ayla Mitchell wins NCAA regional cross country meet

New Richmond natives McKenzie Kelly and Ayla Mitchell will be running for UW-Oshkosh in the NCAA national championship race this Saturday.

Ayla Mitchell is making her final college season memorable. The New Richmond native won the NCAA Division III regional cross country championship on Saturday, qualifying her for the NCAA national championship race.

This win comes on the heels of Mitchell's win in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's championships two weeks earlier. This is the second straight year Mitchell won the NCAA regional meet. Last year she finished third in the national meet.

Mitchell runs for UW-Oshkosh. She will be joined by her teammates at the NCAA nationals, because Oshkosh was named as at-large national qualifier by the NCAA on Monday.

That means McKenzie Kelly, Mitchell's teammate and another New Richmond native, will also be running at nationals. Kelly placed 25th in the NCAA regional meet on Saturday.

The NCAA Division III championship race is scheduled for Saturday in Highland Hills, Ohio.

Scheduled to run in the NCAA Division III national men's meet is UW-Eau Claire senior Mark Sanders. Sanders is a St. Croix Central graduate. UW-EC was named on Monday as an at-large men's team for the national race. Sanders was the sixth UW-EC runner on Saturday.
