Colfax shows off shooting touch against Panther girls

It never seems to fail.

Whenever the St. Croix Central girls play at Colfax, the Viking girls have an incredible shooting game.

It happened again last Thursday. The Panthers went to Colfax and were blitzed by the Vikings, 66-31.

The loss leaves the Panthers with a 3-2 mark in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. Their overall record stands at 5-4.

Central coach Luke Fritsche said he didn't fault the Panthers' defense in the loss.

"That's the best Colfax has shot all year," Fritsche said. "We have better days ahead. I still think we're a good team."

Colfax is a savvy veteran team. They rang up 11 points to start the game, before Central freshman Taylor Refsnider scored to end the Viking run. By the end of the first quarter Colfax had built its lead to 22-7. By halftime the lead was 41-13.

The Panthers set two goals for the game: to not be intimidated by playing Colfax and to take care of the ball. The score might not indicate it, but Fritsche thought the Panthers achieved both of those goals. He said in the early stages of the game the Panthers repeatedly broke the Colfax press to create good shots. Unfortunately, the Panthers couldn't get many of those shots to fall.

"One area we have to improve on is being more creative when we get the ball in the paint," Fritsche said. "We have to be stronger and make better decisions."

Sarah Hawkins and Nikki Brooks led the Panthers with six points each. Refsnider grabbed six rebounds to lead the team and Ashley Adkins came up with three steals in the game.

After a stretch of playing top quality teams, the Panthers now play several games against opponents with worse records. That starts Friday when the Panthers play at Elmwood. Next Monday the Panthers play at Spring Valley.
