Badger State Games making final run in Madison

Wisconsin's Olympic-style sports festival is in the middle of its 24th annual run and its final one in the Madison area.

The Badger State Games began last weekend and they'll continue Friday through Sunday.

About 9,000 people are signed up to compete in dozens of events. That's down from the recent average of 10,000 a year.

Organizers say about a 250,000 people have competed in the Badger State Games since their inception.

They say they've had trouble keeping sponsors in Madison. So they'll move their base to Appleton for the next three years where they're guaranteed $180,000 in total.

Madison has already lost a big part of the Games. The track-and-field competition is being held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, because of construction at Madison Memorial High School.

For that reason, the opening ceremonies, one of the most popular events of the Games, was scrapped this year.
