Bentley wins women's state bowling championship

Mary Bentley has been bowling for more than 40 years and now she has her first state championship.

Bentley recently received the trophy for being the Division 3 All Events state title of the Wisconsin 500 Club State Tournament in Beloit.

Bentley received her state championship trophy at the State 500 Club Bowling Tournament on March 12 in Baraboo.

Bentley bowled at the state tournament with Elizabeth Ziegler of Clear Lake. They have been long-time bowlers at the New Richmond Bowling Center.

Bentley won her state championship by topping 39 other bowlers in the All Events competition.

Bentley and Ziegler bowled together in the Division 2 doubles event, taking third place among 26 entries. Bentley placed fifth in the Division 3 singles event, where 41 bowlers were entered.

Bentley began bowling in 1969 when she worked at Gillette Corporation in St. Paul. She earned her first trophy in 1977, taking second place with a team at Diamond Lanes West alley in St. Paul.

When she moved to Wisconsin she quickly got involved in the leagues at teh New Richmond Bowling Center. She continues to bowl in the NRBC Monday Women's League for Frank Hegner Trophies and she subs for the First National Bank team at Gibby's Lane.

She has bowled at a national tournament in Reno, Nev. and at numerous state tournaments. While she is now semi-retired, there are no bowling retirement plans.

"I am still doing it and in more than one league, so I guess I'm hooked and will probably be doing it until I can't," Bentley said.
