New Richmond, Somerset football teams lock up playoff berths

The New Richmond and Somerset football teams both locked up spots in the 2010 WIAA state football playoffs with lopsided wins on Thursday.

New Richmond went to Ellsworth and won in a romp, 49-0. The Tigers scored on their first drive of the night and were rarely stopped. They led by a 29-0 score at halftime.

Somerset hosted Amery and rolled to a 56-8 victory. The Spartans had a tenuous start, at least partially due to several personnel changes on the offensive side of the ball. Amery led 8-6 until Somerset scored on the first play of the second quarter. From that point on, the Spartans dominated.

In other Middle Border Conference games, Durand surged in the second half to overtake Osceola 28-13. Prescott gave undefeated Baldwin-Woodville a battle for a half on Thursday. The Blackhawks got the game under control in the second half, winning 27-14. Prescott led at halftime 14-13.

The MBC returns to Friday games next week. The marquee matchup comes in Somerset, where Baldwin-Woodville will be visiting. If Somerset wins, and New Richmond tops Amery, it would result in a three-way tie at the top of the conference standings.
