Central girls keep it respectable in loss to Mondovi

After being handled quite thoroughly by the Mondovi girls team in the first round of Dunn-St. Croix Conference play, the St. Croix Central basketball girls were realistic in their goals for facing Mondovi a second time.

The Panthers were aiming to keep the margin respectable and to stick to their game plan. They accomplished both, playing quite solidly in a 43-31 loss at Mondovi last Thursday.

Mondovi has been an offensive force this season in building up a 14-2 record. Central held the Buffalo girls to 41 and 43 points in their two games. The only time Mondovi has scored fewer points this season was in its only D-SC loss, to Colfax, 45-39.

Central coach Luke Fritsche said he was quite pleased with the intensity the Panthers showed against Mondovi.

"They really played about as hard as they could. Mondovi is just a better team," Fritsche said.

Mondovi was able to get points from its post players in the first meeting, so the Panthers came out in man-to-man defense this time to try shutting down the post scoring. The Panthers were successful in that goal.

"That's a pretty big credit to Taylor (Refsnider), Miranda (Holzer) and Shaylyn (Lyksett)," Fritsche said.

Mondovi is an exceptional defensive team and that showed again on Thursday. Senior Nikki Brooks scored 10 points and Ashley Adkins scored eight points, but no other Panther had more than three points. Brooks was able to get points by posting up, something that Fritsche said the team will try to do more often when opponents try to use smaller players to guard Brooks.

This Friday versus Plum City the Panthers are holding a "Coaches vs. Cancer" night. People can buy pink SCC T-shirts the entire week at the high school for $10. The girls team is doing a raffle for Hudson and River Falls Golf Club 18-hole passes, Milwaukee Bucks tickets and SCC Under Armour shirts. The team's goal is to pack the gym with pink that night. All proceeds benefit the local Relay for Life effort, supporting cancer research. Anyone wanting to buy tickets can contact Coach Fritsche at St. Croix Central Elementary at 715-749-3119.
