Brooks, Adkins receive All-DSC girls basketball honors

St. Croix Central seniors Ashley Adkins and Nikki Brooks have been viewed as top basketball players in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference for most of their high school careers. That status was again validated when they were named to the 2011 All-DSC team.

Brooks was named to the All-DSC first team, while Adkins was a second team selection.

These seniors led the Panthers to a fourth place finish in the conference, with a 10-6 record.

Brooks has been the cornerstone of the Panthers' program for most of her high school career. This year she led the Panthers in nearly every statistical category, including points (247), rebounds (150), assists (77) and steals (60).

In each of the past two years, Brooks ranked among the top two players in the conference in assists.

"She's been our leader since she was a sophomore," said Panther coach Luke Fritsche. "She's a tremendous student-athlete."

Adkins could be nicknamed "Instant Offense." When she caught fire, no amount of defense could shut her down.

"Statistically, she was the best shooter in our conference," Fritsche said. "She seemed to hit big shots in the fourth quarter when we really needed them."

The Panthers held their team banquet on Tuesday, when team awards were announced. The awards include:

Most Improved: Jordan Risberg

Miss Hustle: Laura DeSmith

Panther Pride/MVP: Nikki Brooks
