Spartans stick closely to MBC soccer leaders

Facing the two leading teams in the Middle Border Conference, on their home fields, was a challenge the Somerset girls soccer team met head-on last week.

The Spartans made the trip to Superior on Tuesday and on Thursday they hiked to Spooner. The Spartans put up a good fight in both cases, losing 2-1 in both games.

Somerset scored first in last Tuesday's game at Superior. Hanna Barritt scored the Somerset goal. The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime. Superior scored the deciding goal midway through the second half.

Somerset also scored the first goal of Thursday's game at Spooner. Spartan junior Laura Wells scored the only goal of the first half. Spooner came back with two goals in the second half.

"In both games we had scoring opportunities, which is an improvement," said Somerset coach Erin Wilson. "We made major improvements from our 5-0 loss against Spooner the last time that we met them."

The Spartans complete their regular season schedule this Thursday with a game at New Richmond.

Somerset is in Division 2 for the WIAA tournament series this year. Seeding for the tournament bracket should be announced this week. The first game for the Spartans in tournament play will be on Tuesday, June 2.
