Tarter chosen for Team USA football

Derrek Tarter will be the eighth Somerset High School football player to play in the Global Challenge Bowl.

One of the traditions that has grown from the success of the Somerset football program has been Spartan players being selected to play for Team USA in the Global Challenge Bowl.

This year, SHS senior Derrek Tarter has been selected for the game. He will be the eighth Somerset player who will travel to Italy in April to play in the 2012 Global Challenge Bowl.

The experience is a combination of football and tourism. The American players will get to see many sites in Rome and Florence, including The Vatican and the Roman Colosseum. Tarter said his parents had been planning to take a vacation, so they decided to join him as part of the American contingent making the trip.

The American team of high school seniors will play the Italian U-19 National Team on the eighth day of the excursion, which is April 21.

Tarter said he has been interested in making Team USA ever since he heard stories from past Spartan players about their experiences on the trip.

The other Somerset athletes who played abroad through the Global Challenge Bowl include Burt Geurkink, Tony Martin, Bryan Witzmann, Darrin Emmeck, Rocky Larson, Luke Buerkley and Rob Wendt.
