New Richmond to host WACPC dance regional tournament on Saturday

New Richmond dance team members who received All-Middle Border Conference honors include (l-r) Leah Bauer, Kim Miller, Jensen Hagen, Megan Chelberg and Erika Bohmke.

The New Richmond High School dance team and the New Richmond Athletic Department will host the 2013 Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches (WACPC) Dance Team Regional Competition this Saturday at the high school gym.

"It's very exciting and a great opportunity for our school district as well as the entire New Richmond community," said Tiger dance coach Ali Saliny. "The opportunity to host WACPC regionals is something that I've always had my eye on, and when our new high school was built, I knew we could do it."

Last summer, New Richmond Athletic Director Casey Eckardt and Saliny were presented with the opportunity to showcase their facilities to the WACPC board.  After a few meetings, they got word that WACPC had officially named New Richmond as the host for the regional competition.

"Casey and I gave an initial tour over the summer and after five minutes of being in our high school, the WACPC board was sold on hosting this big event in New Richmond.  They were so impressed with our schools, our facilities, and our entire community," Saliny said.

The regional competition has been held in Eau Claire for many years, but will take place in New Richmond for the next three years.  With 42 teams, 60 coaches, and nearly 2,000 spectators participating in this competition it will to bring business and new faces to New Richmond.

"Many local businesses, such as Ready Randy's and Family Fresh, have helped us prepare by making big donations. Everything we need for that day, from the concession stand to the signs directing traffic, has been purchased locally or has been donated by and from our community. The support from local businesses, New Richmond alumni, the New Richmond athletic department and the dance team parents have all played a vital role in working to make next Saturday's Regional competition a success!" Saliny said.

This event is open to the general public. On Saturday, doors open for spectators at 9 a.m., the competition beings at 10 a.m. and admission is $5.  "It's going to be a great day full of incredible talent and great competition" said Saliny. "Our team has seven strong seniors. They are the heart of this team, more dedicated than ever before."

The NRHS dance team has spent a great amount of time to prepare for regionals and hopes to earn another trip to the state competition.
