The Bantam A state youth hockey tournament in Somerset over the weekend was a dramatic, action-packed event.

The New Richmond Bantam A team completed its season with a second place finish in the state tournament, while Somerset took third place. New Richmond and Somerset both suffered their defeats against the defending state champions.

New Richmond's first round game resulted in a 6-0 win over Wisconsin Rapids. In the semifinals New Richmond faced a determined Rice Lake team, but the Tigers were able to produce a 5-3 win.

The championship game was a rematch of last year's state finals between New Richmond and Fox Valley. Fox Valley returned all but two players from last season's state championship team.  New Richmond eventually lost a hard fought 5-2 game. The game was a one-goal battle most of the way.

New Richmond's Bantam A Team completed its season with a 23-18-5 record.

Somerset looked unstoppable in the opening round of the tournament, crushing Waunakee 11-2. The Spartans then ran up against Fox Valley in the semifinals. Somerset's hopes of a state title went down in an 8-4 defeat. The Spartans bounced back with a well-played third place game, defeating Rice Lake 6-1.
