New Richmond golfers win MBC title by narrowest margin possible

Among the All-Middle Border Conference boys golf players are New Richmond's Kole Hallmark and Ben Norman (front, second and third from left), New Richmond's Connor McCann (back, second from right) and Somerset's Matt Skoglund (back right).

The winning margin for the Middle Border Conference golf championship ended up being one stroke.

The New Richmond boys golf team earned the 2013 MBC championship on Monday, but not before some tense moments in the final conference golf match of the season. The Tigers finished tied for third in Monday's golf match. If they'd have had one more stroke on their scorecard, the Tigers would have tied Osceola for the conference team title.

Osceola won Monday's match at Ellsworth with a score of 159. Home teams have done incredibly well on their home courses this year and Ellsworth continued that trend, shooting a 160. New Richmond and Amery tied for third place with scores of 164.

Senior Ben Norman led New Richmond by shooting a 40 on Monday. Tanner Wisemiller and Joey Turnipseed both shot 41, Connor McCann a 42 and Kole Hallmark a 43.

Coach Jim Saliny said the exceptional depth in his program lifted the Tigers to the championship. The Tigers had six players who ranked among the top 21 players in the conference this season.

The Tigers had three players earn all-conference honors. Hallmark finished second in conference points this season, with McCann finishing fifth and Norman ninth. Turnipseed ranked 13th in conference points, T.J. Leverentz 16th and Wisemiller 21st.

Saliny said the Tigers put together a strong, consistent season to win the title when they weren't the favorite at the start of the season.

"I knew it would be close between us and Osceola," Saliny said. "Everyone was picking Osceola, but I guess we proved them wrong."

Somerset finished third in the MBC final standings. The Spartans had an off day on Monday, finishing sixth among the eight MBC teams with a score of 175. Matt Skoglund led the Spartans by shooting a 41. Danny Green finished at 43, Hunter Iverson 44, Dante Germain 47 and Josh Mecl 48.

Skoglund was the only Somerset player to earn all-conference honors. He ranked third in the conference points total for the season.
