New Richmond Millers in search of pitching

New Richmond catcher Kyle Millers huddles with pitcher Ryan Stephens during the Millers' loss to Prescott on Sunday.

A bulging elbow is causing the New Richmond Millers a great deal of discomfort.

Millers ace Hayden Zimmerman is currently sidelined with a bad elbow on his valued pitching arm. With Zimmerman unavailable, the Millers are in a search for new team members who can step in and provide pitching help.

Manager Ryan Stephens had to take the mound on Sunday when the Millers played a St. Croix Valley League game against the Prescott Pirates. Prescott knocked the ball all over Citizens Field in beating the Millers 10-0.

While the Millers put Stephens on the mound, Prescott countered with Mark Moriarty. Moriarty has a bit more of a pitching pedigree. He pitched for the St. Paul Saints in 2009 after a college career at St. Scholastica. The Millers managed one hit, a single by Stephens in the second inning.

Stephens, Josh Leavens and Riley Kannel took turns pitching. Kannel was the most effective, allowing one run in the final three innings of the game.

The Millers also played at home on Friday, losing to Blaine by an 8-2 score. The Millers are in need of players and that showed Friday when they had to play the last three innings with eight players. First baseman Ryan Telschow had to leave after six innings to play in his band, Sunday’s Regret.

Until that time, the score was tied 2-2. Blaine scored two runs in the eighth inning and four in the ninth inning, trying to hit the ball to the outfield area the Millers left vacant.

Coleman Roskam gave a promising pitching effort for the Millers, working the first eight innings.

The Millers got their runs in the final two innings. Stephens singled home Kyle Miller in the eighth inning and Mitch Paquin brought Jon Will home with a single in the ninth inning. Will and Stephens led the offense with two hits each.

The Millers don’t have a game over the Memorial Day weekend. Their next game will be played on Wednesday, May 28, when they host Stillwater.
