Dunn-St. Croix Conference cross country is Thursday, St. Croix Central is ready

The 2013 Dunn-St. Croix Conference Cross Country Meet will be run at Whitetail Golf Course, near Colfax.

The meet will begin at 4:30 p.m., starting with the girls high school race. Next up will be the boys high school race, followed by the middle school race. Whitetail Golf Course is located south of Colfax.

St. Croix Central goes into Thursday’s meet with high hopes, especially the Panther boys.

“The boys have a goal of winning,” said Central coach Bill Emery.

Emery bases that goal on the Panthers’ win in their most recent competition against the other D-SC teams. On that day, freshman Michael Sauers ran with a bad hamstring. It dropped him back from being the Panthers’ second runner to their sixth runner. The coaches have rested Sauers since then, with the hope that he’ll be back to his usual performance at Colfax on Thursday.

Where the Panther girls will finish is anyone’s guess. It likely won’t be in the top two spots, which will likely go to Colfax and Spring Valley. The Panther girls have not been overly consistent this season.

“It depends on which personality shows up,” Emery said of his team. “They could take third.”

Colfax is a prohibitive favorite in the girls race. Emery said the Viking girls have the potential to make an impact at the state level this season.
