Hockey tournament starts funding for Goodrich scholarship

Tournament director John Larson (right) presents a check to Dave Goodrich, Josh Goodrich’s father, with the funds raised from the Josh Goodrich Scholarship that will be established in New Richmond.

The Josh Goodrich Memorial JV Hockey Tournament raised more than $1,400 that will be used to establish a scholarship in Goodrich’s memory.

The tournament was played at the New Richmond Sports Center on Nov. 29-30. The weekend was a celebration of the life of the former New Richmond hockey player who died in a car accident on July 30, 2012.

The tournament was the idea of Tiger assistant coaches John Larson and Tyler Hansen. They received the blessing of the New Richmond Hockey Association Board and the high school administration to hold the tournament.

New Richmond won this year’s four-team tournament. Because Goodrich was a goaltender, a Goodrich Goalie Award will be given to the top goaltender in each year of the tournament. This year’s award went to New Richmond goalie David Mayry.

Larson said he hopes to have the tournament on the same weekend each year and he’s hoping to add more teams next year.

“The attendance was great for all the games,” Larson said. “The teams were very respectful of the situation.”

A fund at the New Richmond School District office has been set up for anyone wishing to donate to the Josh Goodrich Scholarship Fund.
