Thursday’s Results: New Richmond wrestlers hold off Somerset

One of several exciting matches in Thursday's New Richmond-Somerset wrestling dual featured Somerset's Bailey White (left) and New Richmond's Derek Dowd. White won the match 5-4.

The New Richmond wrestlers got more of a battle than they expected in Somerset on Thursday, but the Tigers were able to survive for a 45-27 victory.

Somerset led 24-18 after the first eight weight classes, but New Richmond won five of the final six classes to pull out the win.

Earning wins on the mat for New Richmond were Shane Blackman, Caleb Neumann, Dominic Ficociello, Alex Schmidt and Jake Rose. Somerset’s wins were supplied by Josh Maack, Fred Mangine, Bailey White, Logan Peterson and Max Praschak.

In other local events Thursday:

The New Richmond boys hockey team opened its Middle Border Conference schedule with a 10-3 win at Baldwin-Woodville. Jeremy Leavens scored three goals to lead the Tigers.

Somerset’s hockey team also opened its MBC schedule Thursday, scoring a 9-1 win at Amery. Reed Kelly had a hat trick in the Spartan win.

The Western Wisconsin Stars traveled to Siren, losing to the WSFLG girls hockey co-op team, 5-4.

New Richmond’s boys basketball team rode 18 points from Caleb Manecke and 10 from Connor O’Loughlin to win at Hayward 46-38.

St. Croix Central’s boys basketball team lost a non-conference game against Osceola, 47-30.
