Somerset dance team competes at conference meet

The Somerset dance team that competed at the Middle Border Conference meet includes (back, l-r) Coach Sarah Colling, Coach Hailley Leverty, Stacy Bracht, Layne Cran, Gerquita Lauderdale, Samantha Waalen, Joely Mart and Coach Tara Montgomery; (front) Kacie Larkowski, Ashley Beasley, Hannah Rosentreter and Gabrielle Vogel.

The Somerset High School dance team reached a new level of success in several aspects when it competed in the 2014 Middle Border Conference Dance Meet on Jan. 4 at Hudson High School.

The Western Wisconsin Dance Conference brings together teams from the Middle Border, Big Rivers and Dunn-St. Croix conferences for a day of competition. Somerset competed against New Richmond, Osceola, Durand, Prescott and Amery in the Middle Border Conference portion of the meet.

The Somerset team earned second place in the kick division and third place in the pom portion of the competition.

Somerset’s small group ensemble of team members Joely Mart, Ashley Beasley, Hannah Rosentreter and Stacy Bracht earned third place, which earned them second team all-conference honors.

Somerset also had Gabbie Vogel compete in the soloist portion of the conference meet. Vogel received first team all-conference honors.

This was the first time Somerset has received any trophies at the conference meet.

Somerset coach Hailley Leverty said the girls were quite excited with the honors that they brought home from the meet after never winning any honors before.

The Somerset dance team also competed at the Rambler Dance Invitational at Eau Claire Regis High School on Dec. 21. Somerset earned first place in the team kick competition in Division 2, while placing third in the team pom competition. The group ensemble of Mart, Beasley, Rosentreter and Bracht earned third place and Vogel was the champion in the Division 2 solo competition.

The next competition for Somerset will be the WACPC regional meet, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 at New Richmond High School. Somerset will be competing in Division 4 of that meet, while most of the other MBC teams will be competing in Division 3. Leverty said the team has more than doubled its practice time this season, with the goal of qualifying for the state meet.

“We are very hopeful that our team will advance past regionals this year and we look forward to the competition,” Leverty said.

In addition to the team competing at regionals, Vogel has submitted a solo performance video to the regional judges. Her dance was choreographed by Tara Montgomery, one of the Somerset coaches.
