Going up against lifters from larger schools showed in the individual results for the New Richmond powerlifting team when it competed in a meet at Holmen on Saturday.

While the Tigers weren’t able to bring home any weight class titles, the girls did win the Division 1 team championship.

The Tigers took 38 lifters to Holmen and were able to have 12 of them place among the top five lifters in their weight class. This meet put the Tigers against teams from the southern part of the state and put them into a setting more like the state tournament. There were 325 lifters competing in the meet.

“That’s exactly the reason we went down,” Tiger coach Brian Kaczmarski said about the meet. “Better competition, bigger competition.”

While the Tiger girls didn’t score any individual wins, Kaczmarski said the team championship says a great deal about the depth of talent in the Tiger girls program.

The individual highlight of the meet for the Tigers was produced by junior Dillon McKenna. He became the 13th Tiger to qualify for the state meet. McKenna took third place in the 148-pound class.

“He’s another of those pleasant surprises,” Kaczmarski said.

The Tigers don’t have another meet until Feb. 22, when they compete at a regional meet in Whitehall. The coaches are happy to have that large gap between meets, especially this year.

“With meets and snow days, we haven’t had a good, hard, old-fashioned practice in two weeks and it’s affected us,” Kaczmarski said.
