Five local players earn All-State boys hockey honors

The announcement of the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association All-State Team brought great news for five area boys hockey players.

Somerset seniors Drew Kelly and Adam Marty were both selected as first team all-state players. New Richmond seniors Tanner Wisemiller and Jeremy Leavens were named as honorable mention all-state players, as was Somerset junior Reed Kelly.

This is the second time in team history that Somerset has two players named to the all-state first team. The first time was in the 1995-96 season when Trent Landry and Dan Gilkerson were first team selections and Jade Parnell was an honorable mention player.

Gilkerson is now the coach for Somerset. He was thrilled to see his players honored. Drew Kelly, Marty and Jordan Langness were honorable mention all-state choices for the Spartans a year ago.

Hockey all-state teams are chosen differently than the all-state teams in most sports. Voting is done by northern coaches for players from the northern half of the state and by coaches from the southern half of the state for southern players. This was done to assure a better division of awards and more accurate voting by coaches who know the players from their area.

Somerset’s offensive force this season helped the Spartans to get recognized in the all-state voting. Marty finished 15th in the state in scoring with 62 points and Reed Kelly tied for 16th in the state in scoring with 60 points. Drew Kelly was the top scorer in the state among defensemen with 40 points.

Wisemiller and Leavens were the leaders who helped turn New Richmond from a below .500 team a year ago to a sectional finalist this season. Wisemiller ranked in the top 30 in the state in scoring, finishing with 52 points. Leavens ranked in the top 20 in the state with 31 goals scored during the season.

Kelly honored

Somerset’s Drew Kelly received another substantial hockey honor this week when he was named to Team Wisconsin. The team was selected from Wisconsin high school seniors who played in the Wisconsin Senior Tournament in Waupun on March 15-16.

By being selected for Team Wisconsin, Kelly will play in the CCM Minnesota High School Hockey National Invitational Tournament. The tournament will be played on April 27-28 at the Plymouth (Minn.) Ice Center. This tournament is considered one of the best proving grounds for high school hockey players in the country. Scouts from every National Hockey League team and many of the nation’s top collegiate and junior hockey programs attend the tournament.
