New Richmond golfers run out of time in MBC title pursuit

New Richmond’s Kole Hallmark tees off on the 11th hole during last Tuesday’s Middle Border Conference tournament.

The comeback the New Richmond boys golf team put together in the final weeks of the Middle Border Conference was an admirable one.

But the Tigers ran out of time in their attempts to capture the 2014 MBC championship. The Tigers won the 2014 MBC tournament at Bristol Ridge Golf Course last Tuesday, but it left them two points behind Osceola in the final overall MBC standings.

New Richmond’s boys had won the final two MBC matches before winning the conference tournament. In each of their three victories, they beat the Chieftains by one stroke. In the conference tournament the Tigers shot a 330, compared to Osceola’s 331. New Richmond junior Kole Hallmark was the tournament medalist, finishing at 76 for his best round of the season.

The Tigers’ hopes of completing the comeback for the conference title were dampened by two rainouts. A match scheduled the day before the conference tournament was rained out, as was a match a week earlier that was supposed to be played at Amery.

New Richmond coach Jim Saliny cursed the weather for being so uncooperative as the Tigers tried to make their charge in the final weeks of the season. He said a match at Durand, where three teams tied for first place ahead of the Tigers was the setback the team couldn’t overcome.

“Overall, it was a good comeback,” Saliny said.

Hallmark and senior Tanner Wisemiller both finished as first team all-conference golfers, finishing fourth and fifth in the conference standings. Senior Connor McCann finished eighth in the conference standings to get second team all-conference honors.

Hallmark’s 76 led the Tigers at the conference tournament. McCann shot 82, Thomas McKinney 85, Wisemiller 87 and Cole Hansen 90. McKinney and Hansen won a playoff for the fourth and fifth positions in the varsity lineup. Because the Tigers have several players whose season averages are so close, Saliny had them play off for the fourth and fifth positions and they will do this again before this week’s WIAA regional tournament.

The Tigers were scheduled to host the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament this Wednesday at the New Richmond Golf Club. The top four teams from the tournament will advance to the Eau Claire sectional meet next Tuesday, which will be played at Wild Ridge Golf Course.

As they’ve done all season, the Somerset boys maintained their third place position in the conference tournament. The Spartans finished four strokes behind New Richmond, finishing at 335.

The Spartans have been incredibly consistent this season, while different members of the team have taken their turns leading the team. At the conference tournament, junior Hunter Iverson and freshman Wil Gauper shared the team lead by shooting 82. Senior Danny Green shot 83, freshman Alex Lahde 88 and senior Zach Bahr 91.

The team’s consistency led Iverson and Bahr to earn second team all-conference honors. Iverson finished second in the conference point totals and Bahr finished seventh.

The Spartans were scheduled to host the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament at Bristol Ridge Golf Course. The top teams and individuals from the regional meet will advance to the Division 3 sectional tournament that will be played at the Cumberland Golf Course in Cumberland.
