Somerset's Tyler Lueck slides home for the Spartans' third run as New Richmond pitcher Cam Hausman awaits a throw during Friday's game.

The Somerset and New Richmond varsity baseball teams clashed at Somerset's Larry Forrest Park for their 2014 Middle Border Conference finale.

While both teams flirted with disaster severely times during the game, it was Somerset that did better with runners on base, giving the Spartans a 3-1 victory.

This game decided which team finished in third place in the conference standings. The teams entered the game tied for third place with 3-1 records.

Somerset scored in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk by Tyler Lueck. New Richmond tied the game in the third inning when Caleb Manecke doubled down the third base line to score Keilan Mehls.

Somerset took the lead for good on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt in the third inning. Jon Sullivan got the bunt down, with Lueck scoring on the play. The Spartans added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Lueck scored on a wild pitch.

New Richmond will be back in action on Saturday in the Tigers' 2014 home finale. The Tigers host Marshfield in a double-header at 11 a.m.

Somerset is done until it begins WIAA Division 2 regional tournament action on Wednesday. The Spartans will host the winner of Tuesday's game between Amery and St. Croix Central.
