Spartans rally past Osceola

The Somerset first-baseman attempts to tag out an Osceola base runner on a pick-off attempt by the pitcher.

The Somerset Spartans baseball team used a six-run fifth-inning to rally past Osceola at Larry Forrest Park in Somerset and claim a 6-5 win in the Section 1 Regional Championship game of the WIAA Division 2 Baseball Tournament.

With the win, Somerset advances to the next round of the tournament where they will face Hayward on Tuesday, June 10, at 11 a.m. on Bement Field at Cinder City Park in Altoona.

The Spartans trailed 5-0 after four and half innings, but a three-run home run over the right-field foul pole in the bottom of the fifth cut Osceola's lead to two and opened the door for the comeback. Somerset scored again with bases loaded and one out on a two-run double before one of the Somerset baserunners tried to advance to third on the throw from the outfield, which caused the Osceola player covering third to mishandle the ball and allow the runner to score from third.

Somerset held off Osceola in the top of the sixth and later in the seventh where the relief pitcher struck out the first two batters before getting the third batter to pop out in foul territory.
