Somerset's Aaron Joppru wins state pole vault championship

Somerset's Aaron Joppru has been setting the standard for high school pole vaulters in Wisconsin all season.

Joppru continued that on Friday, winning the Division 2 state pole vault championship in the opening day of the 2014 WIAA State Track Championships at Veterans Stadium in La Crosse on Friday.

Joppru won the state championship when he was the only Division 2 vaulter to clear the bar at the 14-foot, 9-inch mark. Joppru then attempted to set a state record, having the bar raised to 15-2, but he was unable to clear that height.

The Division 2 and 3 pole vault championships had to be decided in MItchell Hall, UW-La Crosse's indoor track facility. A rainstorm swept through La Crosse moments after the Division 2/3 state meet began at 3 p.m. It resulted in the meet being delayed by more than two hours.

Somerset has several more events to compete in on Saturday. Somerset's Max Praschak ranks third in the Division 2 110 meter hurdles after Friday's preliminary races. Somerset senior Dallas Johnson will also compete in the Division 2 long jump event on Saturday. So will Somerset junior Heaven Hunt in the high jump.
