Spartan baseball advances to sectional championship

The Somerset Spartan baseball team advanced to the WIAA Division 2 Sectional championship game for the third time in four years with a 2-0 shutout win over Hayward early Tuesday afternoon in Altoona. The Spartans will face the winner of the 1:30 p.m. game between Ellsworth and Viroqua at 4 p.m. today in Altoona, for the right to play in the state tournament starting on Wednesday, June 18.

Tyler Lueck once again led the Spartans on the mound with six innings of shutout baseball. Lueck allowed just six hits over the six innings he pitched. He was able to preserve the shutout by working out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the fourth inning.

Somerset scored its first run in the fourth inning after Aaron Moore singled and then scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. The team's second run came in the seventh inning when Andy Peters scored on a fielders choice.

If the Spartans were to win the Sectional No. 1 championship game Tuesday, they would move on to the state tournament where they would play the Sectional No. 3 champion at 6 p.m. on Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wisc. on June 18.
