Bradish plays in state tennis tournament for third time

Nick Bradish became the first New Richmond boys tennis singles player to compete in three straight years at the Division 1 level in the WIAA State Tennis Championships last Thursday.

Bradish lost in the opening round of the Division 1 state tournament to Nicolet junior Kevin Ballacer 6-4, 6-1. Ballacer came into the match with a 25-3 record. Bradish finishes his senior season with a 24-5 record.

Ballacer played two singles for one of the top boys tennis programs in the state, so this was a severe test of Bradish’s tennis skills. The first set was quite a battle. Ballacer built a 5-2 lead. Bradish won the next two games and was within a point of tying the match at 5-5. Bradish also played competitively in the second set, but couldn’t finish off the games he was winning in the first set.

“The kid he was playing, it was almost like he had another gear,” said New Richmond coach Mike Montello. “Nick drew a really quality opponent and played real hard right to the end.”

Bradish played one singles in all four years with the Tigers. That skill level helped the Tigers rank among the top teams in the Middle Border Conference each year.

“The level of play he has, it was good to see that level in New Richmond,” Montello said. “It’s not something we see very often.”
