Roll resigns as Somerset athletic director

Somerset Athletic Director Bill Roll has decided to leave the school district after serving 3.5 years in his current role.

Roll said he resigned to pursue other career opportunities. Roll was hired as Somerset’s athletic director after serving in an administrative position at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. Roll also served as Somerset’s boys soccer coach, leading the Spartans to their first Middle Border Conference championship last fall.

“I’ve enjoyed my time in Somerset, working with the coaches and the advisors. I think the programs have moved forward since I’ve been there,” Roll said.

Roll pointed to the success of the Spartan athletic programs during the past year as an indication of the program’s health. Somerset won the boys basketball conference championship, the football team advanced to the state semifinals, the track team produced two state champions and the baseball team reached the sectional championship game. He said there was healthy growth in band and choir, and forensics and a dance line was added during his tenure.

According to Somerset District Administrator Randy Rosburg, interviews for Roll’s position will be conducted next Monday. He’s hoping to present a candidate to the school board for hiring at either the July 7 or July 21 school board meetings.
