High school football 2014 season begins on Monday

The peace of summer will soon be replaced with the popping of shoulder pads.

Wisconsin high school football teams can begin their seasons next Monday. Teams are allowed to issue equipment, do testing and complete paperwork on Monday. Football teams can take the field for their first practices next Tuesday.

Here are the opening dates for the rest of the fall sports. On Monday, Aug. 11, boys soccer and girls golf can begin their practices. Girls tennis can begin practicing on Tuesday, Aug. 12. Cross country and volleyball can begin their practices on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

New Richmond

Anyone interested in seeing the first New Richmond football practice of the 2014 season will need to set an alarm clock.

The Tiger football team will meet for the first time on Monday at 8 p.m. They will spend the next four hours getting all the pre-season necessities completed. The Tigers will stay at the school, beginning their practice at the earliest possible time, at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday. Second year coach Keith Badger began the tradition of the early start last season. Two banks of light towers have been rented to illuminate the high school practice field for the event. The practice is open to the public.

Another event begun last year that proved popular was the Tiger Football Community Night. This year’s Community Night will be on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Pictures will begin at 5 p.m., and youth scrimmages will begin at 6 p.m. Grades 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, ninth graders, junior varsity and varsity will all scrimmage that night.

New Richmond Middle School football begins its practices on Monday, Aug. 18. The following two days, the middle school teams will practice alongside the high school team.

St. Croix Central

The Panther football team reports for duty next Monday at 7:55 a.m. The team will hold its equipment distribution then, along with other pre-season duties. For most of the first two weeks of the season, the Panthers will practice from 7:55-10:30 a.m., take a 30-minute break, and then complete their practice for the day with a session from 11 a.m.-noon.

The Spartans meet for the first time next Monday, from 8 a.m. to noon, for equipment checkout and testing.

The Spartans will alternate long-day and short-day practice schedules. On Aug. 5, Aug. 7 and Aug. 9, the team will have its long practice day. On Aug. 6 and Aug. 8, the team will have short practice days. That schedule will continue into the second week of practice, which will conclude with the team scrimmaging at Rice Lake at noon on Friday, Aug. 15.
