Christensen hits ground running as new Somerset cross country coach

Abby (Demulling) Christensen has hit the ground running as the new Somerset cross country coach.

That’s not a bad thing. Running is something with which Christensen is quite familiar.

Christensen was a standout runner at New Richmond High School. Her high school career reached its pinnacle at the 2002 WIAA State Track Championships, where she ended her senior season as part of New Richmond’s state championship 3200 meter relay team.

Christensen continued her running career, where she competed in cross country and track at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. In her senior season for the Bulldogs, Christensen earned NCAA All-American honors by placing fourth in the 800 meter run at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships.

After graduating from UMD, Christensen and her husband took teaching jobs at Shakopee, Minn. They both also coached. Abby coached track and cross country. Her husband, who was recently hired in New Richmond, was the head track coach and assistant girls hockey coach.

Abby left coaching in 2011, a year after their first child was born. She got back into coaching two years ago, coaching at the junior high level.

“I loved coaching so much, so I went back,” she said.

Christensen takes over as cross country coach for Julie Mocadlo, who took a teaching position in Minnesota. Christensen is also taking Mocadlo’s spot on the teaching staff, as a K-12 physical education teacher, where she will teach in all three school buildings.

The timing of the move to Wisconsin for the Christensens came with their 4-year-old daughter scheduled to begin pre-school this fall.

“She would have been in a class of over 700 (at Shakopee),” Christensen said. “We wanted a smaller district, to be closer to family.”
