St. Croix Central football makes successful MBC debut over Somerset; New Richmond also falls
The St. Croix Central football team made its long-awaited debut in the Middle Border Conference a rousing success.
The Panthers won their first MBC game on Friday, going to Somerset and defeating the defending MBC champions, 25-6.
New Richmond also was defeated in its MBC opener, losing at Osceola 21-14.
Central and Somerset battled to a 6-6 tie at halftime. Central got the break of the game when Cole Refsnider blocked a Somerset punt early in the third quarter. That set up a touchdown run by quarterback Kyle Larson.
Central scored again late in the third quarter on a 30-yard blast by fullback Cody Gostovich. Gostovich scored the game's final touchdown with 1:50 left in the game, shortly after Larson had broken free for a 62-yard run.
Osceola led New Richmond 21-14 at halftime and neither team was able to reach the goal line in the second half.
In the other Middle Border Conference games Friday, Amery defeated Baldwin-Woodville 23-6 and Prescott edged past Ellsworth 25-22.
