Weinzierl to play volleyball at Augsburg University
New Richmond High School volleyball standout Hanna Weinzierl will continue her volleyball career at Augsburg University.
A letter of intent ceremony was held during the high school lunch period last Thursday for Weinzierl.
Weinzierl was a first team All-Middle Border Conference selection each of the past two seasons. As a left-hander, Weinzierl gave the Tigers a unique and valuable weapon. She emerged as one of the leading outside hitters in the conference over the past two seasons. Weinzierl finished the 2016 season with 58 blocks and 166 kills. New Richmond coach Al Getschel pointed to Weinzierl’s special work ethic.
“Hanna has an impeccable work ethic in practice, always leading the team both with voice and in overall effort. Her level of commitment will make her successful at the collegiate level as that is a demanding role to play on a college team,” Getschel said.
Weinzierl, a senior, first emerged with the Tiger varsity team as a sophomore. She said ever since then, she’s been thinking about playing volleyball for Augsburg. Visiting the school and the team quickly cemented Weinzierl’s beliefs that Augsburg was where she belonged.
“It’s a real family feeling there,” Weinzierl said. “And Coach Jane (Augsburg coach Jane Becker) is amazing.”
Augsburg won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship last fall with an 11-0 record. Weinzierl is one of five players the Augsburg coaches recruited for the team next season. Weinzierl said the coaches initially plan to use her as a middle and right-side hitter.
Weinzierl said she plans to major in either human resources or business management in college, with a minor in marketing.
Weinzierl will become the second Middle Border Conference player on the Augsburg roster. Defensive specialist Macey Terhell is an Osceola graduate.
